Serena's Story

Serena's relationship with dance is deeply personal and has numerous highs and lows.

dance

Serena discovered her natural apt for moving her body through space when she started her dance journey in ballet at the age of 3.5 years old.

With a childhood that was tumultuous and as a result Serena leaned on dance for refuge.  It became a safe space where nothing matter but movement.  Dance became her language, her community, her outlet and essentially... her home.

Serena left school at 16 to attend Musical Theatre School.  However after having developed an eating disorder at 14 which later became exacerbated by full time dance study at 16.  Her weight dropped dramatically as did her mood and motivation.  Much to her surprise she was praised by her teachers for her "good work".  In addition to this her dreams were crushed when she was told by teachers that there were things I could never be because of the colour of her skin.  All this lead to make Serena question if this was truly the profession she wanted to be a part of.

Serena dropped out of Musical Theatre school and then studied a Diploma in Forensic Science before thinking of pursuing forensic pathology.  However, she missed dance immensely and decide to give it another go, only this time... in Contemporary dance.  Serena studied for 3 years at the London Contemporary Dance School graduating in 2010.

The industry is full of out dated views, opinions and expectations.  It is full of abuse,
